Sekiro: No Defeat is headed to theaters, but you have to live in Japan to see it early

Sekiro: No Defeat, the highly anticipated anime adaptation of FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, is slicing through theaters exclusively in Japan starting Sept. 4. The upcoming three-week theatrical run was announced on X alongside a stunning new key visual of the Wolf and Kuro standing on blood-soaked snow with the tagline reading (translated from Japanese): “Together. To live, and to die.”

Sekiro: No Defeat has swiftly grown into one of the most anticipated anime of the year. While the theatrical rollout is exclusive to Japan for now, the series is planned to stream on Crunchyroll sometime later this year, yet no global streaming premiere has been officially confirmed. Polygon has reached out for clarification and will update this page when there’s more info.

The promotional material reinforces the project’s high-profile production pedigree, which includes studios Qzil.la, Kadokawa, and ARCH as main production houses. Directing Sekiro: No Defeat is Kenichi Kutsuna, a relative newcomer to the role with years of key animation work under his belt, and penning the script is Takuya Satou. Character designs are credited to Takahiro Kishida of Haikyu! fame, and the score is being handled by Shuta Hasunuma. FromSoftware is also directly involved with the production.

Early visuals continue to lean into the show’s 2D hand-drawn aesthetic that closely mirrors the game’s stark, painterly tone. The story will follow events similar to those in the game, centering on Sengoku-era Japan and the Shinobi Wolf in his quest to “restore balance to a nation on the edge,” per Crunchyroll’s description. The first two trailers and other assorted PVs have already teased major boss encounters, including Genichiro Ashina and other familiar figures from the acclaimed 2019 game.

This latest reveal is the clearest indication yet that Sekiro: No Defeat is moving into its final promotional phase. With its theatrical release now set and promotional assets rolling out, Sekiro: No Defeat is positioning itself as one of the more ambitious game-to-anime adaptations in recent years. Lucky fans in Japan will get their first taste this summer.
